Extremely powerful, it really does give you the confidence to play hard fighting fish with the knowledge that you can give them line, and also apply the breaks whenever you need to.

I love this reel! The Coreprotect design that Shimano has integrated in this reel ensures that the internal elements of the reel are protected from dust, sand and water, so you can expect the reel to last longer and perform to its maximum potential for a long time.

This in turn will add more cranking power and torque to your retrieve, and is another element of the smooth experience this reel provides. One thing that should be mentioned about this reel is the fact that it does not have an anti-reverse lever. But for some anglers this could be an important factor, so definitely worth mentioning. Shimano has removed the anti-reverse lever from a lot of their spinning reels to make them more water tight. Although the removal of this lever may be a miss for some, it will provide more longevity and durability to the reel.

Gear Ratio. Drag Power kg. This reel is not going to be for everyone that is looking for a Shimano spinning reel, for one main reason: the price! But for those that want the best, and do not bulk at having to pay the hefty price tag attached to the Shimano Stella FI reelsthen you can be assured you are getting a spinning reel of the very highest quality. Probably the Stradic's are as good as you will ever need a reel, but the other reels also are very tempting, especially given the promotion prices now.

In the near future I also might add a lighter rated rod Tide Walk Hi Tide grams, or lighter to my arsenal to complement the Shoregame 9. Which of these reels would you get, and why?

The Exsence looks great and it would be a great threat, but will it be that noticeable better than the cheaper options here? Last edited: Dec 27, Like x 1. Remove Advertisement. In terms of balance points with different rodsEveryone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover.

Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here. Privacy Terms. Price is not to be considered a factor in the decision, I am looking for the smoothest, best built, most dependable, longest casting reel between the three. Croix Legend Elite rods and mostly inline spinner and spoons.

Does the Sustain have knob bearings, if so, how many? Thanks PS I did read the reviews on Tackle Tour, and as many as I could find doing a web search, but I still appreciate members opinions. The Sustain is noticeably smoother out of the box, by a pretty good margin. It has 2 bearings in the knobs.

Casting distance is about the same, but there's only so much they can do to improve casting on a spinning reel. The rapid fire drag is a nice upgrade over the FJ as well, especially if you use light line most of the time.

It has almost identical features as the Sustain minus a couple bearings and a kickstand. Unless you're going to use it to fish for big catfish, stripers, or saltwater species like tarpon I don't think that you'd even notice it's made of carbon. Otherwise, I like the FJ myself. If I do buy the Sustain I was going to replace it's drag washers with Smoooth drag Carbontex washers, would that be an upgrade or downgrade to the "Rapid Fire" washers? We all know how posted specifications can be wrong at times, so are they correct and lastly, what about my discrepancy question at the end?

I'm moving closer and closer to the Sustain - something about carbon fiber just doesn't sit well - maybe I'm just too old fashioned. If you guys verify the differences are correct - and that it is the only differences, or provide any additional comments, it will allow me to make my final decision.

Thanks again. It comes with both a kickstand and normal cap, will work with either. It looks like you are the only one who wants to play today! The decision is made, it is the Sustain FG. Until someone actually reports what happens when a graphite reel is dropped on a hard surface boat dock, or even worse a concrete ramp from boat-on-trailer height I'm not going to trust graphite reels.

Eventually it is going to happen too somebody, and when it does it won't be me!

Shoulda just looked it up in the first place. Thats how my brain works when i am tired. Although I didn't abuse the CI4 reels, I didn't baby them either. I never had any problems with them - not even the round foam handles. IMO, fiber reinforced plastics are more durable than cast aluminum.

Now, if you are buying the Sustain because it is a higher category reel, wellLast Updated on June 17, The Shimano Sustain has been around for a time now but underwent its first modification in seven years this last year to kick this premium reel up a notch. Keep reading this Shimano Sustain FI review and I will do my best to help you decide if the few extra dollars to step up from the Stradic ci4 spinning reel makes sense for you. Contents Jump To. What this means is that you can feel the strike better and that you can fight the fish better.

The cold forging process uses nearly tons of pressure to instantly create a precision gear without the need to do any cutting. The advantage of this is that there is less room for error in the manufacturing process. This proprietary process creates a gear drive system that is both durable and smooth in this Shimano spinning reel. Shimano uses the Magnumlite material to manufacture the rotor reducing more weight in the overall reel while still providing strength where it is needed.

By positioning the pinion gear closer to the center line of the oversized drive gear, more power is transferred from the handle directly to the rotor. This creates more stability and minimizes pinion gear twist and rotor deflection in extreme situations delivering a much smoother experience when the fishing reel is under load.

This is combined with a water-repellent coating and what is referred to as water channeling to minimize water penetrating the fishing reel. This design that was first introduced on the premium Shimano Stella and also adds grease in between the second and third lips of the ring to keep high-pressure water out and deliver a smooth silky feel.

Cross Carbon Drag system — The cross carbon drag system is infinitely adjustable meaning that you have a series of clicks on the drag adjustment that allow you to dial in precisely the amount of drag you want from almost free spool up to the reels maximum drag capacity.

This gives you a very solid feel in the reel which just screams quality. Modela C that has the same size body as the but has a deeper cut spool for more line capacity both with 20 lbs of drag capacity come in a 6. Then the models and a C again with the deeper cut spool for additional line capacity both with 24 lbs of drag capacity come in a 6. While the Sustain is a great all around reel that can be used for all of your freshwater fishing, it is especially good for your inshore saltwater fishing and even some smaller offshore species such as dolphin, smaller tuna, bluefish, and stripers.

What I really like about the Shimano Sustain FI is that it is designed to keep saltwater out of the reel components with the X-Ship technology. Shimano uses a three groove sealing system in critical areas to keep water channeling away from the reel. The first ridge of the seal keeps low-pressure water from intruding. The groove between the second and third ridge is packed with grease to keep water that is under higher pressure from penetrating. This is what Shimano refers to as their labyrinth construction which is a fancy name for lots of water protection.

All of this combined with the water-repellant coating means that you will have a reel that will last longer and require less maintenance. As usual, I will say that the 30 seconds it takes to spray your reel with something like Salt-Away and then rinse it after each use in saltwater is well worth the investment of time and product. When casting the reel, I noticed that the bail was extremely easy to open and just as easy to flip shut with the crank of the handle.

I felt that the GBody design really makes for an extremely well-balanced reel that will go well with something like a St.
